5 Signs Your Parent Might Need Support at Home

It's not always obvious. Here are the subtle signs that your aging parent could benefit from in-home care.

It starts with the little things

You visit your parent and notice the fridge is mostly empty. The lawn hasn't been mowed. There's a stack of unopened mail on the counter. Nothing alarming on its own — but together, these small signs can paint a bigger picture.

Here are five signs that your aging parent might benefit from some support at home.

1. Changes in personal hygiene

If your parent has always been well-groomed but suddenly seems dishevelled, it could signal difficulty with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or grooming. This doesn't mean they're unable — it might mean they need a hand.

2. The house isn't what it used to be

A parent who's always kept a tidy home but now has clutter, dishes piling up, or laundry everywhere may be struggling with the physical demands of housekeeping. Light housekeeping support can make a world of difference.

3. Weight loss or poor nutrition

An empty fridge, expired food, or sudden weight loss can indicate that meal preparation has become too difficult. A caregiver can help with grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking nutritious meals.

4. Missed medications or appointments

If prescriptions are going unfilled, pills are scattered, or doctor's appointments are being missed, it may be time for medication reminders and appointment support.

5. Social withdrawal

A parent who used to be social but has stopped seeing friends, attending church, or going out may be dealing with mobility challenges, anxiety, or depression. Companionship care addresses the loneliness that often accompanies aging.

What to do next

If you've noticed one or more of these signs, it doesn't mean you've failed as a child. It means you're paying attention — and that's exactly what a good child does.

The next step is having a conversation with your parent about support options. And if you'd like guidance on that conversation, we've written about that too.
