Why I Left the System to Build Belle Vie

Jess shares the experiences that led her to create a better kind of home care agency.

I didn't plan to start a business

I planned to help people. That's why I became a personal support worker. That's why I went back to school for social work. That's why I took the administration role at Community Care Durham.

But the more I saw of the system, the more I realized: the system isn't built to help people. It's built to process them.

What I saw as a PSW

As a frontline PSW, I saw the best and worst of home care. The best: genuine human connection with clients who needed someone to care. The worst: impossible schedules, no time to actually care, and the constant feeling of being disposable.

I'd arrive at a client's home with 30 minutes to bathe, dress, and feed them. Thirty minutes. For a human being who needed dignity and patience.

What I saw in administration

When I moved into administration, I thought I could fix things from the inside. Instead, I saw the full picture: how scheduling prioritized efficiency over people, how caregivers were rotated through clients like interchangeable parts, and how families were left completely in the dark about their loved one's care.

The breaking point

There wasn't one moment. It was hundreds. But the pattern was clear: the current system treats care as a commodity. Workers are resources. Clients are cases. Families are invoices.

Building the opposite

Belle Vie Care is everything the system isn't:

Small by design — because boutique means better

Careful matching — because your parent isn't a case number

Real communication — because families deserve to know

Workers valued — because good care starts with respected caregivers

I didn't start Belle Vie because I read a business book. I started it because I spent years watching the system fail everyone it was supposed to serve.
